Increase the first aid knowledge of Taiwanese to grasp the golden rescue time in critical situations.
In the first phase, I collaborated with three designers, and I was mainly responsible for creating Annie's model and the UI/UX design. In the second phase, I continued to optimize the UI/UX, from defining the problems to delivering the final visual design.
The challenge lies in ensuring that Taiwanese are not afraid of breaking the law and can respond to emergencies appropriately in different situations.
During the first phase of the presentation, we received encouragement from several individuals, which helped them understand first aid knowledge and bravely attempt to practice it.
01
First aid is crucial for saving lives. On average, individuals will encounter approximately 3.48 emergencies during their lifetime. According to the National Fire Agency, Taiwan experiences around 20,003 cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) each year, but the survival rate remains only about 24%. In contrast, Seattle boasts the highest OHCA survival rate in the world, at 67% annually. This remarkable statistic is attributed to the city's fire department's proactive promotion of high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and comprehensive CPR training programs. As a result, Seattle continues to maintain its status as the city with the highest survival rate globally, with this rate steadily increasing each year.
For patients experiencing OHCA, the critical window for effective intervention is between four to six minutes. If CPR is not initiated until the ambulance arrives, the likelihood of survival drops to approximately 30%. However, if an AED shock is administered immediately, the chance of survival can increase to as high as 70%. For each minute that passes without oxygen, the probability of survival decreases by 7% to 10%. After ten minutes, the chances of survival become exceedingly slim. In Taiwan, the average response time for emergency services is six minutes, which already surpasses this crucial timeframe. Therefore, prompt public assistance is essential.
Although Taiwan has installed over 10,000 AEDs since 2010, these devices are utilized in less than 1% of emergency situations. Additionally, only 30% of individuals are willing to perform CPR during emergencies. Research from Ontario's Prehospital Advanced Life Support (OPALS) program in Canada indicates that reducing the time it takes for an ambulance to reach the scene is a significant challenge. However, if CPR and AED use are initiated as quickly as possible, the chances of survival for the patient improve significantly.
02
In Taiwan, schools, government agencies, and private organizations offer CPR and AED courses. In fact, Taipei City, the capital of Taiwan, provides approximately 2,000 free first-aid training sessions each year, with nearly 110,000 individuals participating.
However, why is it that in emergency situations, so many people remain reluctant to provide first aid?
To assess the level of first-aid awareness among Taiwanese and explore the challenges faced during the learning process, we interviewed EMTs and participated in EMT licensing courses.
Additionally, we conducted a literature review and analyzed data, which yielded the following results:
• Worried about a lack of skills and the potential to cause harm to the patient.
• Unfamiliar with the "Good Samaritan Law" and concerned about potential legal liability after providing first aid.
• Even after learning CPR, the absence of hands-on practice results in insufficient mastery of the skills.
Lack of hands-on experience can result in unfamiliarity and anxiety regarding first aid skills.
Unfamiliar with the location and proper use of an AED.
Lack of personalized course design tailored to various age groups leads to diminished learning motivation.
Based on the pain points, I have developed three personas to ensure our design direction.

What's Wrong with Annie?
A team in Taiwan is composed of EMTs, doctors, and other professionals dedicated to promoting first-aid education through innovative teaching methods. Their active efforts in disseminating emergency response knowledge have been a significant inspiration for our project.(Image sourse: 安妮怎麼了)
CPR + AED First Aid Training Courses
There are numerous in-person first-aid training programs offered by various institutions in Taiwan. Participants receive hands-on training and can obtain certification upon completing the course.(Image sourse: Chinese Emergency Medicine Education Association)
From the examples above, it is evident that Taiwan possesses a wealth of first aid education resources. However, online courses often lack hands-on practice, while in-person training may be limited by time and location constraints. Therefore, integrating online learning with practical in-person training through a blended teaching model could be a more effective approach to enhancing public first-aid skills.

Goal
Hypothesis
• Through scenario-based drills and visual guidance in AED operation training, we enhance interactivity and immersion, enabling learners to respond more swiftly in emergencies.
• By integrating with software, learning records and operational guides are systematically stored, allowing learners to effectively review and reinforce their first aid knowledge.
Challenges
User Acceptance
Since first aid training has traditionally been conducted in person, transitioning to a digital or mobile learning model may encounter resistance or acceptance challenges. This is particularly true for older adults, who may be less familiar with new technologies or platforms.
Legal Issue
Although the Good Samaritan Law offers legal protection for rescuers, many individuals still lack trust in its provisions. Effectively educating the public to alleviate this fear remains a significant challenge in the design process.
Limitations of Hands-On Practice
Learning first aid requires extensive hands-on practice. A significant challenge in course design is providing effective training opportunities while ensuring safety is not compromised.
Constraints
Budget
Developing high-quality mobile learning tools or realistic simulations may encounter budget constraints, particularly when designing an interactive learning platform with advanced features.
Time
With only four months available, it is impossible to cover all first aid skills or provide extensive hands-on practice. Therefore, the design must optimize learning effectiveness within the given timeframe while ensuring close collaboration with the team.
Technical
Achieving an immersive learning experience may necessitate specific technological support and equipment, such as AR and VR. This requirement could pose a barrier for some users due to the technical complexity involved.
05
Learners will become more proficient in operating AED devices and will be able to respond swiftly in real-life situations. Through innovative learning methods, we aim to engage more young people and the general public in first aid training, addressing the current challenges of limited participant diversity and low motivation in existing courses.
Due to budget and time constraints, our initial phase will concentrate on concept development, with a particular emphasis on interface design. We will utilize a straightforward UI to effectively convey the overall concept of the first aid learning platform, ensuring that users can intuitively engage with key learning features. Although full functionality has not yet been implemented, we will refine the UI and UX design based on user feedback. This approach will facilitate a seamless transition to more advanced hands-on training features in future development stages.
After several team discussions, the initial version of the design has been finalized, highlighting the following three key points:
